Photography by Aaron Dougherty

From early in his life, photography and design had been of interest to Aaron Dougherty. With a keen eye for anything artful and creative, these passions lended themselves well to a career in photography. Aaron got his start as a furnishings product photographer, working on sets in a studio to capture the perfect photos for the marketing campaigns of major furnishing brands and retailers. But after ten years of this line of photography, Aaron found himself unsatisfied with his daily work. “I really wanted to create images that told a deeper story about my subjects and architecture,” Aaron told us. “Design was always a passion of mine, so naturally that is what I set out to photograph.”

In 2010 Aaron began to offer photography services to interior designers and steadily found great success in his new avenue of photography. With a growing portfolio of interior design photography that felt bright and engaging, and continued joy in photographing interiors, Aaron decided to concentrate all his business efforts into the luxury interior photography industry.

Since 2012 Aaron has been assisting interior designers, builders, and luxury showrooms to showcase their high-end projects through a highly collaborative process. “My goal for every photoshoot is to uncover the interior designer’s signature style in a way that attracts fresh interest from their ideal client,” Aaron said. “My ideal client is one that likes to be a part of the photography process. Being on-site to share their vision really helps to create images that tell a deeper story about the project and/or the designer.” Aaron accomplishes this by mixing the interior designer’s aesthetic with his photography skill.

Before the photo shoot commences, Aaron discusses his client’s vision for the images and how they want to use them. Aaron then takes care to light the scene in a manner that will make the design of a space the hero of the photo. Supplemental lighting is also used to create a shot that is visually attractive, bright, and full of texture and accurate color. As they begin capturing photos, Aaron engages his client in the process, suggesting compositions that will attract the viewer to walk into the image and explore more. “Using an iPad to view the images, the client can see what my camera sees during the shoot,” Aaron explained to us. “Working together, we move furniture, add floral, take out distracting elements, and make the space look inviting and, most importantly, well-styled.”

Aaron’s interior design clients can be assured that he will go above and beyond to create success for them. “Not only do I work tirelessly to create beautiful, print-worthy images, but I also empower my clients by giving them the information they need to know in order to get their images into interior publications for more exposure.” His expert advice has resulted in images being featured in multiple publications including the New York Times, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, and many others. Aaron even informs his clients about annual design awards and deadlines in case they’d like to enter submissions.

From start to finish, Aaron Dougherty walks beside his clients to ensure they receive the highest quality of service. Every photo Aaron takes tells a story about the homeowner’s lifestyle and the luxury that the designer brings to their home. Interiors photography is an extremely special and valuable field of work in the interior design industry, and Aaron Dougherty Interiors Photography makes it even more so.
