Website Design for Interior designers, Architects & Builders
One of the most common questions I get from interior designers, architects, and custom home builders is:
“Why do you specialize in websites for design firms?”
The main reason is pretty simple. My dad is a practicing Architect in California, my mom went to school for Architecture, and I also went to school for Architecture getting by Bachelors of Architecture (BArch) from Cal Poly Pomona in 2010. In fact, all three of us went to the same college! I also worked for five different architecture firms between 2004 and 2010 before designing my first website for an Architect based in Riverside, California. In 2010, I designed my first website for a large construction firm in Orange County, California. And in 2013 first interior design website was for a designer based in Brooklyn, New York.
Although I did not intend at first to focus on this industry exclusively, I also love residential design and architectural photography. I’ve designed websites for dentists, therapists, and lawyers, but when it comes to sharing my Portfolio with others, I would always show my favorite Architecture, Custom Home, and Interior Design website examples. And this simply led to more and more of those projects.
The reason I share this, is because the more you show the kind of work you want to do, the more you’ll get of it. This is the same for any industry, but especially within the design and art world. Clients want to select a designer than resonates with them. It could be your style, your background, or a unique approach. On the About page of your website, you need to lean into this — whatever it might be. It should resonate with you, and be something you are passionate about within the design industry. And it should be really clear so that your prospective Clients also resonate with your approach.
The most commonly-visited pages on a design firm’s website in 2026 are the Home, Portfolio, About, and Contact pages. The Services page has fallen to the 5th and least common page once the Covid years ended around 2022. People want to know who you are, where you are located, why you do what you do, how you got there — and that should connect with your expertise and credibility.
Most interior designers, architects, and builders don’t want to talk about themselves. The don’t want to take a photo of themselves, or share anything too personal. And I am the same way as well. You don’t have to share everything — but you should share what makes you unique, different, and why a Client should pick you or maybe even not pick you.
For me, I do not want to design websites for doctors, lawyers or therapists. The websites are hard to make beautiful. They feel stale. I don’t enjoy looking at them. Their photos are boring, and I personally don’t enjoy those industries. And so for design firms I recommend the same thing. Clients go to your About page, they look at it very closely, so it is a very important page on your website.
